Place : Portage - Cragin Chicago Public Library

Address: 5108 W. Belmont Ave | Chicago IL

Center of Peruvian Arts is a cultural organization based in Chicago. We represent the voice of the Peruvian ancestral cultures in contemporary times. We celebrate how the Peruvian traditions grow each time and transform new generations in the great city of Chicago. Jessica Loyaga and Ruben Pachas, elementary school teachers, are the President, performers, and General Artistic Directors. They have been doing Indigenous research in Chicago since 1995.

The performances today will show the wedding party from the Cusco city called Capac Moro Sipaschay, the jungle dance Shapish of Chupacas, and the Afro Peruvian dance, Chinchivy.

Dance 1: Qapa Moro Sipaschay

The message of the dances is based on human fertility. It is a dance that represents the noctural qashwas, where young singles meet at night and go up to Qapac Moro Hill, to perform their custom. The men carry a charango, or chiller, and the women accompany them with their songs.

Dance 2: Shapish of Chupaca

This dance satirizes the adventurous warriors, who marched to the jungle for fight. After being defeated, they return dressed as natives, with red faces from the punishment of the heat. The name "Shapish" comes from "chapet'on", a term used to refer to adventurous Spandiards.

The dance has three defined parts:

  • The Caramuza, which is the warrior dance.

  • La Cashua, it is footwork.

  • El Chimayche, frenzied stomping of jungle influnce.

Dance 3: Festejo Chinchivy Dance

The chinchivi is a spirit drink from the 19th century, which contains rum and brown sugar. The dance represents the moment when the Afro- Peruvian peasants drink Chinchivy in their free time.
